“Calisthenics is the name given to repetitive exercises that use the resistance of your own body to build strength, increase flexibility and burn fat. No equipment or weights are used in calisthenics, and the exercises can be performed anywhere there is a floor and enough space to move in. The benefits of calisthenics effects are wide-reaching (fitday.com).”
I like to call calisthenics my fitness game changer. Personally, I have been involved in almost every aspect of fitness, training, programming, etc. I believe fitness is multifaceted. If you are committed to living a healthy lifestyle, you may go through various aspects of fitness from speed/agility training, power lifting, bodybuilding, triathlon or marathon training, obstacle course races…you name it! If you are committed to this lifestyle, you will experience different phases of training as the years progress. Again, everyone has their own theory. My theory has always been becoming a well-rounded athlete and fitness professional.
Current health/body limitations have caused a change in my own training. In August I was squatting, benching, and began (for the first time) to take an interest in power lifting, however, my back began to tell me otherwise. I soon discovered the extent of calisthenics, uncovering the potential of the body to develop strength, control, and flexibility without lifting weights. I fell in love and new fitness goals were created!
I came in contact with Swiss of Barstarzz. Now, if you don’t know who the Barstarzz team is…you will! (Youtube video posted at the bottom) They are truly masters of their own bodies. The body control, strength, stability, flexibility, and capabilities exhibited are captivating to anyone who has the opportunity to see them perform. This team is mind-blowing. Swiss, a member of the crew for the past 3 years, has been a major inspiration to me. He has helped me develop my skills and strength the proper way, giving me key pointers as to how to progress safely. I have been training for the past few weeks and have already seen results in every aspect. Recently, I was able to do a yoga pose that requires a tremendous amount of body control, stability, and core strength. In my opinion, the ability to master one’s own body weight is the true definition of strength. Having some issues physically was starting to get me in a funk, but I was determined to not lose focus. I met Swiss at the perfect time in my fitness career. He has been a true inspiration and motivating factor for me.
Benefits of calisthenics: (fitday.com)
- Increased Muscle and Tone- Calisthenics are one of the only ways to build muscle mass and strength without the use of weights. Calisthenics can build a reasonable amount of muscle mass, and maintain it. This muscle growth is accomplished without the tearing and trauma that weight training can inflict.
- Flexibility-When you get stronger, you also become more flexible. A strong muscles does not have to strain to contract as a weak one must to perform. This in turn allows muscles to extend and flex with more ease creating an ideal way to increase flexibility through muscle tone.
- Weight Loss-Calisthenics tackle the problem of burning excess fat from two directions. First, the strength training building muscle mass and tone all over your body. Increased muscle mass raises your resting metabolic rate, allowing you to burn more calories every moment of every day. Second, continuous calisthenics causes your heart rate to rise.
- Endurance-One of the most beneficial effects of calisthenics is increased endurance. Circuit training calisthenics requires you to do as many repetitions of an exercise as possible, without rest, until fatigued. The result is increased endurance throughout every part of the body, including the cardio-vascular system.
**Calisthenics can improve multiple aspects of your physicality. It is an excellent exercise for over-all fitness and health. No matter what your physical goals, calisthenics are worth consideration while achieving them.**
